Maa Durga in Soap stone

  • Sale! magnificent and intricately detailed Hindu stone sculpture, likely carved from reddish-pink or light brown sandstone, portrays the formidable goddess Durga, specifically in her Mahishasura Mardini form, triumphantly subduing the buffalo demon. The central figure of the goddess is dynamically posed, radiating divine power and determination. She is depicted with ten arms, each gracefully extended and holding a distinct weapon or symbolic attribute. Visible armaments include a towering trident (trishula) held high in her uppermost left hand, a taut bow with a nocked arrow in her uppermost right hand, a sharp sword angled downward, and other implements such as a shield or mace in her numerous hands. Her serene yet resolute facial expression is framed by an elaborate, multi-tiered crown, and she is adorned with detailed necklaces, earrings, and bangles, all meticulously carved. Below the goddess, the contorted figure of the male demon, Mahishasura, is shown in defeat, pinned by her foot and various weapons. His struggle is evident in his posture, emphasizing the goddess's overwhelming strength. The base of the sculpture subtly incorporates elements of her traditional mount, the lion, hinting at its powerful presence and enhancing the narrative of her ferocity and dominion. Behind Durga's crowned head, a circular, sun-like or floral aura, known as a prabhamandala, is intricately carved, signifying her divinity and powerful presence. The entire stone carving showcases exceptional craftsmanship, with fine lines and textures defining the goddess's flowing garments, the intricate patterns on her jewelry, the detailed weaponry, and the musculature of both figures. The rich, earthy tone of the stone adds to the sculpture's historical and spiritual gravitas. Set against a plain, dark gray, textured background, the stone artwork stands out, inviting viewers to appreciate the delicate artistry and profound mythological narrative. This piece effectively conveys themes of divine protection, the triumph of good over evil, spiritual warfare, and the enduring legacy of Hindu artistic tradition and craftsmanship.
